What Kind of Father is God?  

Just a few days ago, celebrating Father’s Day meant honor-filled and heartfelt celebrations for some … and difficult moments for many. 

So many who we sit with wrestle with the pain of this relationship. 

Our team has been reading a book that builds a complete picture of understanding the Lord’s Prayer; “The Great House of God,” by Max Lucado. An entire chapter expands on the significance of the two words Jesus used to open the prayer: “Our Father.” 

When Jesus invited us to pray as He did, he invited us to wrestle with the sometimes painful contradiction between the earthly fathers we know and the Heavenly Father we want to know. How can we separate the hurt of a broken earthly relationship from our understanding of God? 

The more we seek and see God’s character, the more easily we can recognize when we’ve attributed traits to him that don’t match who He is. 

What kind of father is God?  

Psalm 103:8, 10, 13 describes God this way:  “The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
