So when we think of taking a walk, sometimes we have a destination in mind and sometimes we are open to just going and following our inspirations and energies where they lead.
Both can be healthy and good, serving different purposes. Often we just want the ‘in the moment reward’ of moving and breathing to address our fitness goals and sometimes we walk for exploration and treasure finds.
My ‘word’ for this year is that- WALK. I have found that it is a rich and challenging theme as I pay attention to my destination, the purposes of this verb, and the thoughts and company I keep on the way. I am using this focus to grow me in my relationship with Christ as I pay attention to hearing His direction and leading.
I had a flashback to my angsting teenage years and remembered a poster on my bedroom wall with the poem by Albert Camus- ‘Don’t walk in front of me… I may not follow. Don’t walk behind me…I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend.’ I thought I was so deep, ha! And yet there is a plea here… that even makes sense today. We need each other, we have a longing for trusted others in our lives, and we can be that for one another.
Jesus promises to ‘make known’ the path of life. (Psalm 16:11).
He also calls us ‘friend’ (John 15:15). So as I continue to walk along in my life whether for fitness, to have adventure, or to keep moving to discover and grow, I know I have the best friend who is right there with me. Show me the way, what to walk away from, and what to walk toward. I trust you Jesus…How about you?
