I heard a phrase recently…
“Understanding yourself does not equal changing yourself”
I find this phrase challenging. It begs the question, can we ever really know and understand? How do we make behavior changes?
Just think of Paul, in Romans 7. “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”
So… are we helpless? Certainly not!
The key, I think, is in our relationship.
Look at Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
He does the searching, the testing and the leading. So, what do we do? We rely on the Holy Spirit’s power to do the transforming within us.
Philippians 2:13, “ for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.”
Hmm, as we walk through our day… invite the Holy Spirit to do the transforming work that only He can do.
Understand?
